Anemia – A Common Blood Disorder Causes Symptoms

Many people with anemia do not know it. This medical condition has insignificant symptoms that one would tend to overlook. Anemic people have lessened the amount of red blood cells or hemoglobin.

The normal count of red blood cells (RBCs) is 13.5 grams for men and 12 for women in 100 ml of blood. You can check this through a test called complete blood count (CBC). When a person is anemic, he or she has a lowered production of RBCs or is losing more RBCs than usual.


Anemia is a disorder that affects an estimated 24.68% of the world population. One can find anemia in preschool children more often with about half of them being anemic. Anemia is found in cats and dogs too as in humans. The common causes of anemia are as follows:


  • Cause of decreased blood production happens due to thalassemia, deficiency in Vitamin B12 in the body, bone marrow neoplasms, and iron deficiency. Formation of the blood cells happens from the bone marrow that creates stem cells that undergoes conversion into RBC, WBC, and blood platelets. When one has leukemia, you find an increased production in abnormal white blood cells. This stops the production of the red blood cells.
  • Blood loss happens due to gastrointestinal bleeding or trauma mainly. Women who have excess bleeding due to menstruation are likely to get anemic.
  • In autoimmune hemolytic anemia, the autoimmune system in our body mistakes the RBCs for invaders and destroys them. This leads to anemia.

On the other hand, the symptoms may show the type of anemia one has. For instance, if one has diarrhea, smooth tongue, and irritability, then the anemia is folic acid deficiency anemia. One has fatigue, jaundice, and painful swelling of feet and hands when the anemia is sickle-cell anemia.

Anemia Symptoms

One notices the symptoms of anemia but dismisses them since they see no alarming conditions. One might have symptoms like increased thirst and experience a feeling of confusion. This is similar to that of getting dizzy and feeling that one is going to pass out. The symptoms of anemia are as given below. The symptoms also depend on the type of anemia one has. There are three types of anemia.

  1. Anemia due to decrease in the production of the red blood cells
  2. Anemic conditions caused by blood loss
  3. Anemia caused by destruction of the RBCs in the blood

This disorder of the blood shows the following symptoms:

  1. Shortness of breath
  2. Pale appearance
  3. Worsening heart problems
  4. Feeling of tiredness
  5. Feeling that the heart is racing
  6. Become fatigued
  7. Chest pain
  8. Headache


When the severity of the anemia is low, the patient will have only slight symptoms such as skin rashes or infections, abdominal pains, and dark colored urine. In general, the blood has a lowered capacity to carry the oxygen since this work belongs to the RBCs.

Home remedies

Popular home remedies include eating a pomegranate, spinach, beetroot, black sesame seeds, dates, blackstrap molasses, apple, and banana, among other things.

  • Beetroot: Contains calcium, iron, calcium, vitamins, sulfur, potassium.
  • Blackstrap molasses: Has essential minerals, B vitamins, iron.
  • Spinach: It has folic acid, B12 Vitamin, iron.
  • Sesame seeds: Rich in iron.
  • Dates: Has plenty of iron and Vitamin C.
  • Pomegranate: Contains plenty of minerals including magnesium, calcium, and iron.


One can have the pomegranates and dates as they are without much cooking. Just peel the pomegranates and eat them. Alternately, you could mash them into a paste and have them with milk or honey. Mix two spoons of blackstrap molasses in a glass of water and have it once daily. This gives you one-third of the daily iron need. Spinach and sesame seed need some cooking. But, if you overcook it, then you will deplete the nutrients it has. Beetroot is good if you have it as a salad. You could boil it but retain the water. Add slices of onion and a dash of vinegar before you have it.


This first and most important step is to include a balanced diet rich in iron. Include leafy vegetables such as watercress and kale. Have brown rice instead of white rice. Eat pulses and beans regularly. White and red meat, fish, and eggs also have iron. Tea and coffee make it difficult for your body to absorb iron. Vitamin C helps increase the absorption of iron.

You could have a regular supplement of iron and vitamin tablets. In some cases, the doctor might suggest the removal of the spleen. Eat dried fruits such as apricot and raisins. Vegetarians have a higher risk of anemia since they do not have meat in their diet.
